BRIEF HISTORY OF CASA ABIERTA
Casa Abierta was founded in 2018 to offer residencies and performing programs in Oaxaca city, bringing forth a much-needed window to observe creative work in the performing arts, particularly dance.
In 2019 a curatorial program was developed in partnership with “El Entresuelo”, a project from Mexico city, in which they selected the artists and pieces to be shared with the Oaxacan community.
In 2020 we created the biennial “For an intimate present” through the idea of SURES DEL MUNDO. We had the wonderful opportunity of meeting with two small groups of artists privately due to the changing conditions of the pandemic.
In 2021 we were awarded the IBERESCENA’s grant, but funding was cut significantly because of Covid, leaving us in a complex situation. CASA ABIERTA had been recognized as an important project for the performing arts in Iberoamerica but remained without enough budget to make it possible.

Who are we ?
Casa Abierta was created by Evelyn Mendez and Anniela Huidobro. For this 4th year, we are expanding our production team with the addition of the following incredible people: Daniel B. García (production), Ximena Fargas (communication), Rodrigo de la Cruz Abundez (graphic design), Javier Echevarrena ( design and communication), Coral (editorial board), Juan Pablo (editorial board), and Daphne Marin (executive producer).
Why a biennial?
Casa Abierta stemmed from an ongoing desire to build worthy spaces for the performing arts while simultaneously supporting the communities surrounding them. We’ve transitioned to a biennial due to the recent pandemic, the world’s changing conditions and the needs of our artists and community. Our first biennial includes works of dance, video arts, performance, and choreography from Mexico and Iberoamerica.
Casa Abierta has two objectives:
First, Casa Abierta intends to establish relationships with artists for a minimum of two years. In this way we hope to build strong relationships with the artists and performers, allowing a more thorough understanding of their motives and ways of working. Our hope is that this more deeply intertwined relationship can develop better opportunities for artists to share their artistic vision with the Oaxacan community.
Second, we intend to organize a public festival every two years, which permits more time and energy to organize a production under optimal conditions.
The upcoming biennial will be held from September 10th through October 2nd. We will host both national and international projects and consider ourselves privileged to be able to share this diversity with everyone.

The biennial “For an Intimate Present” is a creative manifestation that comes from Southern Mexico. This is a place where people recognize creative and expressive needs; where our dances and choreographies speak their own languages to tell of other places and times.
We want to thank all of those that are making this possible by providing spaces to perform

Our work has changed but has not stopped. We have reorganized, restructured, and created multiple economic and creative initiatives to sustain this work. We continue to believe and work with the flexibility necessary to sustain the present Biennial.

· NECIA is a training studio, we share this place for workshops, movement, creation labs, body practices, and more, for the community that offers a learning experience with others.
